Beyond the Gates (often abbreviated as The Gates) is an American television soap opera that debuted on February 24, 2025 and is created by Michele Val Jean. The series is the first daytime television soap opera to feature an African-American cast since Generations in 1989 and the first new daytime soap to debut on a major broadcast network since Passions in 1999. It will feature a wealthy African-American family in the central role.
The show taped its first scenes on November 1, 2024 and its first episode aired on February 24, 2025, replacing the canceled daytime talk show The Talk (which aired between October 18, 2010 and December 20, 2024, having replaced the canceled soap opera As the World Turns).
Premise[]
Per the series' official description, "Beyond the Gates follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community.”
Production[]
On February 23, 2024, it was reported that Michele Val Jean (ex-head writer of General Hospital) would be leaving the role of head writer for CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful after 12 years, since after the end of both ABC soap operas All My Children on September 23, 2011 for 41 years and One Life to Live on January 13, 2012 for 43 years and since after Days of Our Lives moved from NBC to Peacock on September 9 and 12, 2022.[1] The following month, it was announced that Val Jean was developing a new daytime soap opera that would follow the lives of a wealthy Black family.[2] It will be produced by a joint venture of CBS Studios and the NAACP, along with Procter & Gamble Studios. Val Jean will serve as writer and showrunner and will also executive producer alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner.[3][4] On March 15, 2024, it was reported that the series was under "Accelerated Development".[5] On April 15 of the same year, three days after talk show The Talk was canceled, it was reported that CBS ordered Beyond the Gates to series for debut starting February 24, 2025.[6][7][8]
Beyond the Gates will be the first daytime television soap opera to feature an African-American cast in 35 years since short-lived Generations (1989–1991).[6] It will also be the first new daytime soap opera in 25 years to debut on an American broadcast television network since the debut of Passions in 1999, as well as the first daytime soap opera to be produced by Procter & Gamble since the end of both Guiding Light on September 18, 2009 and As the World Turns on September 17, 2010.[9][10]
